United Against Hunger – Food Partnerships

In response to the alarming rate of chronic disease among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), CCE, SC requested and was awarded funding for a three year period starting July, 2017. The funds support the employment of a registered dietitian, familiar with the disability population, to provide a 12-week nutrition education program for I/DD and residential direct support professionals (DSPs) residing at Schenectady ARC group homes throughout Schenectady County. The program seeks to (a) increase the number of individuals with I/DD and residential DSPs who receive nutrition education and learn a new skill, increase knowledge or change a behavior as a result of nutrition education and (b) increase the number of individuals with I/DD who report access and sustainable access to nutritious affordable food, in this case fresh grown vegetables.

In it’s second year the program has been modified to provide nutrition education to individuals in day habilitation programs and their staff as well, to provide nutrition workshops for group home managers, and continue providing the program in selected group homes.
